We love to talk about sex and to experience it but that doesn’t mean that the same goes for all nations around the world. In some parts of the world, sexual expression is frowned upon and laws exist to punish those who fall out of line. For example, in the United Arab Emirates, premarital sex is a punishable offense; this might seem a bit shocking but the law exists so it must be adhered to by its citizens. Sex-related activities and materials also can fall into this realm with there being a strip club ban put in place in Iceland since 2010 and in Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan a lingerie ban was enforced in 2013, whereby regulations require clothing that directly touches the skin had to contain at least 6% cotton.
With that being said, it’s so important to remember that these types of laws exist around the world especially when travelling. Living in a place where you take things like this for granted can mean that your defences are down when travelling as one can easily forget that quite often, very different laws exist in other jurisdictions.
Another area where people need to be mindful of is with adult toys when travelling. It’s easy to become reliant on a sex toy when you use it regularly. It’s like having an adult comfort blanket and something that you can go back to time and time again. Adult toys can also be a wonderful stress buster for people or others love to incorporate them into their couples’ play. Whatever way one uses it, it would definitely be a shame (and a little embarrassing) to have it confiscated at an airport security gate!
While confiscation would of course be inconvenient, it’s so important to check before you travel the laws that pertain in a specific country. Other than the likes of sex toys being prohibited, there are sadly still a number of countries across the world that don’t allow public displays of affection or don’t welcome people of certain sexual orientations. Be prepared, educate yourself but don’t let it stop you seeing the world.
Elizabeth Morris, a buyer from Lovegasm and Carvaka Sex Toys outlines some advice about travelling abroad with your favorite toys: “When travelling, be mindful of all those security checks that you go through at airports. If you can at all, pack your toy in the luggage that goes in the plane’s hold but if you have to place your toys in your hand luggage, remove the batteries and pack the toy in a clear plastic bag so that if security personnel do check your bag, they can see what the item is but they don’t touch it and the plastic bag allows for some level of cover too!”
